How to Get Perfect Tousled Hair by Kristin Ess

Known for her hair tutorials and flame-red mane, celeb hairstylist & beauty expert Kristin Ess breaks down her signature “perfectly imperfect” tousled look using products from her namesake hair care line—available exclusively at Target.

Step 1

Prep hair First, prep wet hair with Kristin Ess Weightless Shine Leave-In Conditioner and follow with a veil of Instant Lift Thickening Spray. “The leave-in helps me detangle and boost shine, and the thickening spray makes my hair feel more dense and gives me more style support to make my waves last,” she says.

Step 2

Brush & section hair “Once it’s dry, I brush through to make sure there are no tangles,” she says, adding, “Hot tip: Never run a hot iron over tangles!” The Kristin Ess Detangling Hair Brush is the perfect tool for detangling wet hair. “Then, I use my Sectioning Clips to divide my hair into two, horizontally.”

Step 3

Curl sections “For my everyday look, I like to go for subtle, polished, barely-there bend,” Kristin says. Using her 2” Soft Bend Curling Iron, take large sections and roll them through the iron starting in the middle and working your way down. Once you curl the section, run a brush through. “The thing I love most about this look is that it’s fast and not super-styled,” she says. “It makes me feel put together but not over-done.”
